Easter














Liturgical season: Easter

Food: Koulourakia

Relevance: Koulourakia is a Greek Easter cookie. They are butter cookies with an egg glaze and sesame seeds.

Recipe:
2 cups butter
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
8 cups sifted flour
2 tbs. baking powder
1 egg beaten with 1 tbs. water
Sesame seeds
Parchment paper

1. Beat butter until creamy, then gradually beat in sugar.
2. Beat eggs until light, then add to butter and sugar mixture. Beat thoroughly.
3. Add vanilla.
4. Sift flour, baking powder, and nutmeg together in a separate bowl. Then add to butter mixture.
5. Flour hands and take 1 tbs. and roll into a snake. Bend in half and twist. Place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Brush with beaten egg/water mixture. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
6. Repeat this with the rest of the batter.
7. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Yields 8 dozen.

Introduction

This idea originated from Courtney, who is Baikal's godmother. She wanted an activity that they could do together to help teach the seasons of the church. By baking together, Courtney hopes to create a memory with her godchild.
